You may not want to start gouging. It is time consuming and costly and sometimes I wonder if it is really worth the effort.
You might want to start shaping cane however. Gouged cane is cheaper than the gouged, shaped and folded variety of cane available. Shaper tips and handles are not that expensives these days. You may find some of the tools on E-bay at half the price you would spend for new ones.
