 Oboe music for a funeral
Author: Bryanwalker

Does anyone have any recommendations of pieces for solo oboe that are suitable for a funeral? My grandfather is currently in hospice and I'm fairly sure that when the time comes my family will ask me to play at his funeral. Any suggestions, either religious (he is a strict Southern Baptist) or secular, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The Schirmer book 'Solos for the English Horn' has a version of Henry Purcell's 'When I Am Laid In Earth' (or 'Dido's Lament' from the opera 'Dido and Aeneas') which can easily be adapted for oboe as it's originally a soprano aria.

Here's a video along with the sheet music - the aria starts at bar 10 (maybe leave out the recitative bars 1-9), Take into account this performance is at Baroque Pitch (415Hz as opposed to 440Hz - much to the confusion of the YouTube commenters) so it all sounds a semitone lower than what's written:

Bach's sinfonia to BWV 12 Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen (Weeping, lamenting, worrying, fearing). While it would sound better with an organ accompaniment, I think it would work as a solo. IMSLP has oboe parts in D minor and C minor. I think C minor works better for modern oboe. Keyboard part for C minor is on IMSLP. I've typeset a D- version.

Off the top of my head, I've done the Saint-Saƫns Sonata 2nd mvmt unaccompanied. The ad lib parts can definitely be done without piano.

At my Grandfather's funeral I performed the 1st and 3rd mvts of the Telemann A minor. Easy, poignant, and moving. If you're looking for something longer the 2nd movement of Albinoni d minor Op 9 no. 2 is appropriate.

Here's a nice video of Jeremy Polmear plying Dido's Lament on EH:
