 Tiny hole in middle key
Author: JohnW

What is the function of the small, off-center hole in the middle, right hand key on my Cor?

Seems to play better with a bit of tape on that hole, though that may be the result of poor technique and my small hands.

Thanks,

John

It's to help with the tuning and response of the altissimo C# and D when the low C or C# key is held down and lowers the RH middle fingerplate so it almost closes (or completely closes depending on what works best for you).

But on a lot of cors it can be sealed up and will improve those notes.

Thanks, Chris,

I tried taping it over and it seemed to actually improve a little, but I thought I was just fooling myself. :-)

Interesting... you have asked the same question I needed to ask, but it's about the vent on the middle, LEFT hand key. I, too, have slightly small hands.

My LeBlanc/Cabart Cor is in the shop trying to fix a couple of instabilities, and when demoing the issues, the tech noticed that I have problems consistently covering this vent especially on high A and Bb. Of course, it sounds like heck when I slip... but it happens when rocking my hand for the 2nd octave key. We noted that the octave key has been mashed down, so fixing that is first and maybe we can keep the hand movement in check.

Anyway, any pros/cons to taping this particular vent shut? I'll probably try it anyway, but hopefully the wiser heads here can shed some light on it.

The hole in the middle of the LH2 fingerplate is for an Ab-Bb (or G#-A#) trill which is done by playing Ab (or G#) and trilling with LH2 for the Bb (A#).

I also have problems covering this on my cor as well (Marigaux 930) as the LH2 fingerplate is offset from the other toneholes being further away from the key barrel presumably for better venting, so it's very easy to slightly uncover it accidentally.
