 Why is baroque reed bigger?

I've just started learning Baroque oboe (actually a copy of a Grundmann late 18th C) and it's quite a learning curve. The reed is much bigger that the modern oboe reed, more cor-anglais sized. I wondered if anyone knew why there is this size difference. Thanks.
