I've just started learning Baroque oboe (actually a copy of a Grundmann late 18th C) and it's quite a learning curve. The reed is much bigger that the modern oboe reed, more cor-anglais sized. I wondered if anyone knew why there is this size difference. Thanks.

They're also far softer and more flexible than the reeds we use for modern oboes as Baroque oboe reeds need to be pressure sensitive to allow the player to jump 8ves easily (both up and down) by overblowing and increasing/decreasing lip pressure as they have no 8ve keys on Baroque oboes to do the work for them.

The bore is wider. The sound is also much mellower. The oboe evolved to a much more strident, focused, louder, higher-ranged sound, which probably only works with a smaller reed.
The easiest way to notice the difference is sticking a cor reed onto the baroque oboe. It sounds so thin. You really need that large and flexible reed to effect the sound. The cor reeds are much tinier (~12.5 mm diameter cane) compared to the baroque oboe reeds (~14-15 mm).
It's a pretty bumpy learning curve, but so fun as well. Probably knowing how to play cor helps as it gives experience in playing on a bigger reed and requiring more breath support.
Baroque bassoon reeds are humongous! I think the width is almost double!

I saw John Symer's baroque oboe that he made himself. He also made a reed with a piece of plastic Pepsi bottle. It really worked nicely. Amazing..!! I am looking forward to try Legere reeds.

Baroque oboe has a bigger bore, it is only natural that the reed is bigger
