Your thoughts on Chiarugi metal staples

Hi all,

I recently bought a few Chiarugi no. 2 metal staples. I've only made a few reeds on them, but I've made them at the same time as other reeds on my old staples (same cane/batch, climate, temperature, scrape, knife, etc). I'm interested to know what other people's experience with them has been.

All the reeds I have made on them are sharp. I make pretty consistent 440 reeds, and I cannot get the pitch of these down there (staples are still 47mm, I finish all reeds to 71.5mm).

The sound is brighter, which I expected. I have had to compensate by taking more from the sides of the tip than I normally do, but I do like the sound I eventually got from them. The staple seems to handle a longer tip than my old staples without compromising tone.

High notes are quite good in general - pitch, attack, etc.

Given my 80 or so old staples are recycled K.Ge cheapies with not a lot of consistency, I might persevere with the Chiarugis and figure out the best scrape for them (might try some wider cane I have as well), but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had similar experiences.

Rachel
