 surface cracks

ACK!!! My new to me oboe (loree royal) has definately got two surface cracks, I swear they were not there yesterday. The top joint still seals for over 15 seconds, are these real cracks?

I have played for almost 40 years on Lorees and have never had a crack...I use humidifiers always but never bore oil. Seems like I should know more about this but I guess I haven't been paying attention. Did a search but it seems most of the advice is about crack prevention, are these probably "pre-cracks" since they don't go through the instrument? I am upping the humidity in the case to try and get things sealed up again.

Of course I am in the middle of nowhere so getting the instrument to a qualified repairperson is a big undertaking, should I send it off in the mail like this?

If you do send it off for repair, make sure you mark the line of the cracks with a pencil as they can close up to become completely invisible making it hard work for anyone repairing them if they can't see where they are.

Contact the dealer. They should have a repair department. I had my incipient cracks in the trill holes pinned to prevent the crack from expanding. No problem since the repair.

Idaho,

Also don't panic. With the industrial super-glues used by many or most repairmen now they can probably glue and clamp the crack with little or no evidence that the crack was ever there unlike the old days of pinning. Some repairmen still pin and this is no big deal either.

Do Not play it, I repeat, I would not play the horn until you have it assessed as the crack could widen and if they widen enough crack to the core which would then become a situational decision of whether to replace the top joint or repair it. Most certainly a crack to the core of the oboe is known as catastrophic and in those cases many manufacturers would reuse your keys on a new wooden top joint in which case... you have a new horn and its a crap shoot as to whether its better or worse than the one you chose yourself.

I had a Loree Crack on me back in the 90's and after they pinned it it was perfectly fine.

The repair takes an hour or two and then done.

Best wishes,
George
