Anyone know why the low E is stuffy and the low register doesn't respond quickly. I've gone through the usually adjustment screws and the suction in lower joint is good so I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

I often find that stuffiness in the bottom joint can be caused by tiny leaks in the top joint. Check everything over, and don't forget the F#G# connection (which may be preventing your RH index finger from closing fully).
Also, on the bottom joint the adjustment of the F#/E/Forked-F vent is particularly tricky.

It could be a combination of a small leak and a reed issue. Sometimes I find that reeds which aren't so happy in the low register don't particularly like E either, it sags or sounds dull.
I often have adjustment issues with the small key between F# and E, the one that goes down with the E key (sorry, I am not good at labelling keys!) When I develop this issue or similar issues with the bottom joint, this is where I start on my oboe.

@rachel, right, that is the tricky adjustment.
On the right hand, that tiny key (actually the F# tone-hole) must seal perfectly either with the middle finger (E fingering) or with the ring-finger (Forked F).
In addition, your ring finger opens the forked-F vent, and the middle finger closes it again.
Thus, depressing the middle-finger (E fingering) must close 3 different keys perfectly; the key itself, the F# tone-hole, and the forked-F vent.

OMG; all of your suggestions have been so helpful, but I just spent some time adjusting screws #6 & 7, which have to do with the F# tone hole as suggested in several of your replies and the E and lower notes are back!! This is the greatest resource and your quick replies saved me just in time for a quintet rehearsal today. (includes Milhaud's Cheminee :-). Thanks again everyone.
