 Has A Standard for Oboe Sound Become Universal?

Here is a post from the IDRS mailing list, made by Robert Howe. Robert has been trying to get a discussion going about how the standard of oboe sound might be different today, from years past. Robert's feeling is that there is a tendency toward everyone sounding the same, whereas in the past, oboe sound was expected to be quite individual.

I believe some of us know, or have studied with Bruce Weinstein of the Israeli Philharmonic, who is quoted here. (I might also mention that my Covey oboe was originally owned by Robert Howe, and he and I have corresponded.)

I was glad to read your article regarding oboe sounds of today. In the past
you could always tell the orchestra by the sound of the oboe. For many years
now, this has not been the case. The trend has gone to a uniformity of sound
and expression that lacks the wonderful individuality of players from the
past. I was fortunate to have studied with Ronald Roseman, Harold Gomberg
and Ralph Gomberg, all individual players and each one unique in his own
way.
That uniqueness is missing today, perhaps gone forever, but it was certainly
the one thing that pushed me toward a career in music as something
undefineable and unexplainable and yet so essential to the idea of
communication in the musical sense.
