Hi tasingp,

In order to help you, we would need to know what kind of oboe reed you play. I think Fortay's reeds are all what we call 'short scrape' as they are based in the UK.

Could you describe what the reed looks like? How far down the reed is it scraped, and does it have a wire?

If you know any basic adjustment techniques, you might be able to make the reed useable. If it is a short scrape reed, you can sometimes 'trick' them into thinking they are harder than they really are by scraping in a particular spot. If not, you might be best asking your teacher.

I know certain makers make their student reeds very soft and free blowing, and if you have been playing for a year, depending how regularly you play, you might be past this stage. I know this to be true of K.Ge reeds.

Rachel
