I consider plastic Selmer USA oboes to be better than their wooden counterparts for the simple fact the joints are less likely to be warped and definitely less likely to crack. I play a Selmer Signet Soloist 104 oboe as my back-up/outdoor instrument and it's a great oboe for what it is (even though I have done several modifications on it to bring it up to UK spec).
