Keep in mind that centering a different blade in the carriage is a non-trivial task requiring quite a bit of trial and error. Be sure to save all of your split cane that is even remotely gougable (pitch the badly twisted and curved pieces) even if you know it won't be useful for reeds. That way you will not be wasting good cane on your preliminary trial and error in setup.
The rdg gouger is a good machine. I used one for years until I designed my own...
