Generally I like to make reeds over three days......starting on a wet day I have found is best. First day remove bark only over the length of my scrape ( I do a long scrape but not in the American fashion), and at this point I also thin the tip. The second day I cut the tip off, and fashion the scrape of the tip and the heart until I can just get a squeak, and the third day, I complete the reed. I also find Spring and Autumn the best times for truly stable lovely reeds, but it depends how hot and dry the summers are, and how cold and damp the winters are ( I am in Sydney, Australia but not near the coast so the weather is more extreme in the wild south west of the city)
