Perhaps it could do with the overall climate stability of the season? I've been warned not to finish reeds when it is awfully humid or stormy because normally, it isn't very humid here. The summer is the most erratic here. Overall, though, I've not noticed any marked difference between the seasons.
Some interesting things while playing with reeds lately. It was a moderate spring here when I finished a bunch of reeds. Fairly playable. Took them to Toronto (hot, humid, low elevation) and surprisingly they sounded pretty good, dare I say even better. Brought them back home a month later to summer weather. Almost none of them were playable and tossed to the bin. On the flip side, had some (baroque) reeds I was playing on in Toronto (made there). The extreme temps/humidity opened the reed like you haven't ever seen. Had to squeeze/thin them constantly. Sounded beautiful. Brought it home. Reed sounded soooooo thin like a store-bought reed and it looked 100% closed. Also a full semitone flatter. But still playable as a practice reed. Then, I went to the mountains and I took the oboe up over a glacier (don't ask). Barely could get a squeak out of it! To experience the extremes really makes you realise (appreciate??) the finickiness of these reeds.
