You're quite right, Mark, and also You-Tubes made with handy-cams don't help either.
Albrecht Mayer sounded almost as fantastic on his Buffet (with the white reed cap) as he does on his Gebr. Mönning. so the player is everything.
Christophe Hartmann sounds rather clear, but I have heard the Dupin Imperial sound very rich.
It's just too bad that it's difficult to associate player with instrument. Getting more internet recordings this way would be a fascinating study.
Still, this is a really exciting time for young students.... in my day, I only had access to vinyl LP's available in the Conservatoire library (very limited for oboe) and the MSO. The sounds and styles of players worldwide were reserved to the few very rich who could afford to travel during holidays.
