I'm a bit wary of using anything powdery (or recommending it) as it could cause problems later on through continual use. I definitely don't recommend using loose talc or French chalk dust as it can so easily be overdone by anyone over enthusiastic and far too liberal with its use causing far more serious problems when it gets into the mechanism.

The powder papers are probably alright for light use to remedy the occasional sticky pad when it occurs, but if it's a persistent problem it's best dealt with properly (thoroughly cleaning the affected pad and tonehole, regrinding or replacing the pad) instead of relying on temporary measures.

I used the BG pad thingy on my basset horn when playing in a freezing church which was good as it saved a lot of embarrassment of having waterlogged toneholes (which could easily be solved by fitting more bushes to the offending toneholes on the back of the instrument - a bit of an oversight on Buffet's part there!).
