Hi,
I am president of the board of a community orchestra.
http://seniorpops.org.
A Community Orchestra have multiple purposes ... friendship, socialization and performance.
They do not have to be at odds with each other.
Our community orchestra has various levels too. However, there is an expectation to do your best .... that might require taking lessons and/or securing appropriate assistance. It is not a social club to drop by - have a piece of cake ... and go home. There needs to be a culture that promotes commitment as well.
It is the board's objective to develop the orchestra - there is active recruitment of players ... appropriate programs to enhance and challenge.
Where I live there are at least 6 or more active community orchestras.
The reputation of an orchestra is quite important.
So pleasure comes not only from the fun of playing ... it also comes from a job well done and the sense of pride in the organization.
Mark
