I will admit, I enjoy the well known orchestras more, but there are many factors for this. The program was put together quickly, so not as much time rehearsing. The players would have different musical concepts, coming from all these different backgrounds. But this type of program does lend itself to a certain type of audience (If not a broader range, at least it is more accessible). I mean, I watched the whole thing for free in my bedroom.
I'm lucky that I'm not an orchestral player, so I am just here to enjoy the music. I feel bad for those that did not make it, but hopefully this type of program will lend itself to more opportunity for good musicians.
A critique, I hated the original piece. Almost skipped over it. Probably the reason being that silly sampler the composer insisted on playing. Two notes:
1. I'm not sure composers shouldn't just compose, and let the performers perform.
2. The sampler seemed to feed directly into the PA, which consequentially destroys the tonal blend of the orchestra, since every other instrument will be miked at a distance. I hate how lazy sound designers are. If they want the sampler to blend with the orchestra (and this is exactly what they should be shooting for), hook the sampler up a small PA or keyboard amp on stage, and then mic the sampler's PA the same way you would any other instrument. This would compensate for the space relationship between acoustic instruments and their microphones, and ultimately in theory should blend just fine. A sampler or keyboard that goes directly into the house becomes too big of an instrument, and only works for bass instruments.
