Hey, Dutchy -
Over the course of my career I participated in a lot of auditions for significant jobs.
What I found to be true was that for any job I was auditioning for there were 50 or more folks auditioning, sometimes twice that number. Four or five were young players getting their feet wet, a few were just in over their heads, but most of the candidates could do the job just fine.
I've also sat on audition committees, with about the same mix of candidates.
Ultimately what we would decide (and I'm sure it was the same when I auditioning) was based more on how we felt the musical expression we heard would fit into the existing section than sheer technical proficiency. And were the selections really exemplary of the period and the composer's style or just note perfect...
The interesting thing about the YouTube Symphony is that there was no historical model to fit into, so a lot of decisions were made by individuals in a hurry, rather than by a more traditional process, and yet the performances were, if not awe inspiring, at least competent.
That's a hard thing to pull out of thin air...
