This is a great discovery! Congratulations!
Yes, I find that often times there is a gigantic leap in quality of reeds as a young reedmaker moves from scraping off "chunks" to scraping in "layers" or "steps". I describe it as rather than taking a big janitor's push broom and taking one big push five feet and calling it "swept", you do a series of pushes, each about 1 foot each and having them overlap. The result is you have a cleaner floor and a more even distribution. I believe the same result and knife technique applies to reed scraping.
Again, congratulations, and I applaud you for your experimental spirit.
