Think of the 3rd 8ve in this way - if you think you're in tune up there, you're most likely playing sharp. If you think you're playing flat, chances are you're in tune. The top notes will sound much flatter than you think when they're in tune.
I wish a lot of flute, piccolo and sax players would realise this!
