If anyone is scared away from the oboe by this forum maybe that is best for them after all. To get anywhere on the oboe requires motivation and perceverence, and it should not hurt anyone to have a realistic view on what it takes to learn this instrument before they start. To survive as an amateur orchestral player you have to be able to do the fast stuff. Rythm, staccato, runs,arpeggios, double tounge, the lot. This is by no means easy, and takes years of practice. There is no sense in hiding this fact from beginners. All the same, playing a simple tune in an expressive, eloquent and beautiful manner has allways remained the main challenge to me as an oboist. This requires musicality an taste, and you need to have total control over your body and your instrument. Once you get basic finger technique established I think oboe technique is mainly about the tone control needed for sustained expressive playing, and I think no one is much of an oboist till they can play an adagio beautifully.
