 Making reed cases
Author: WoodwindOz

I would like to experiment with making reed cases, firstly as a project for myself (I am a crafty soul who loves to work with my hands, and clearly has too much time on my hands at the moment!) and possibly to sell when I go back to Oz as we have little access to anything like that unless it's online (and then we pay bucketloads in shipping!)

I've worked with foam in the past for instrument cases, so I will probably go that way, but what can I use for the actual case?

I've seen the cigarette cases, and there are plenty of Chinese made ones which go for pretty cheap and can be ordered in bulk. But I estimate that only 3-4 reeds could fit in a container of this size, what about containers for larger numbers of reeds? And does anyone know of an approximate width of container to number reeds ratio? Or the minimum depth of a case needed to accommodate reeds?

I know I'm being specific, but I am constantly amazed by the span of knowledge on this site, so here's hoping!

Cough-drop boxes and foam carpet underpadding are our best friends![rotate]

I love wood cases, lacquered. They feel much better than metal. Of course if you lacquer the metal, you could get the same effect I believe. Lots of guys do wood cases, so the market seems pretty full. I like the idea of recycled cough-drop boxes or other recycled products. That could be a good product for the earth conscious.

Buffet makes a greenline series oboe that is essentially wood dust and a bonding material. I don't know how the process works, but that could be a possibility, and you wouldn't even need a full block of wood.

One person who used to make reed cases (and sold lots of them on The Auction Site) simply purchased likely-looking boxes wherever she found them -- Goodwill, other thrift stores, Wal-Mart, wherever! Then she lined them and glued in some dense foam strips with cut-outs to hold the reeds, and another beneath that to make pushing the reeds up from the slots easier.

One that I got from her years ago is still one of my faves -- it's a box she found at a bookstore, with an inspirational verse on it.

Also, take a look at the VERY DETAILED explanations by Robin Driscoll on how to make them with the velvet "ribbon"

http://www.youtube.com/user/opus1gouger

I think my carpet-foam thing is much easier and holds the reeds better... then again, the velvet ribbon looks a whole lot better!

I like Mr. Driscoll's method. I would probably do it that way, but many people are not that skillful. For them there is always this option:

I tried the strip from Reed'nStuff. I did not like it. Thank you Robin for Driscoll's video. He is good! I may try this.

Still, the foam carpet underpadding has lasted me for years wihout fail and is really easy to cut with a metal ruler and an X-Acto, Olfa, Stanley or any retractable blade knife.

And no need to worry about cleanliness: there's nothing more to worry about it than velveteen. At worse, spray it with Lysol!

Thanks for the link, Robin, although by watching the first video in the series he didn't seem to explain what the substance was that he used to back the velveteen to make the reed holders - it looked like card to me.

I recall some time ago on this board that someone had suggested some kind of flexible material (possibly a soft metal?) which was in a strip and could be shaped but held its shape somewhat (don't know if I explained that very well, I guess it would have a consistency similar to solder?), but for the life of me I couldn't find it in a search!

I have also located some very cool cases that are marketed as hard case wallets (like a hard ladies purse) on That Auction Site which would make very marketable larger reed cases - God bless China's ability to make cheap and cheerful trinkets!

On that (slightly sideways) note, has anyone ever purchased one of the wooden reeds cases that come out of Korea and China, and what was you experience with it? I bought one of the bassoon reed cases, and while I don't use it that often it seems to be fine, but just curious about ongoing regular use?

if you keep watching (i just watched the entire series) he says that it is just card stock.

It depends on who makes it.

My teacher got one of the 50 reed cases on ebay, but the clasp stopped working soon after and she uses a rubber band to keep it closed. Looks like this:

I have a swiss/chinese oboe case (those chinese silk ones) and it's been good for a few years, there is fraying now in the rear corners of the case. The hinge is the silk fabric so at some point that would wear, but that is still in good condition.

I have one of these reed cases for YEARs, light brown, and it hasn't aged.

My FAVORITE reed case is an 8 reed case made by the oboe repair guy at RDG woodwinds, it fits in the oboe reed slot in your case. It's just lovely and convenient. I heard he stopped making them though... his website still has them.

He is not just the oboe repair guy at RDG woodwinds. He is John Peterson, one of the premier oboe techs in the west coast. He must have run into some slow periods after cracking season rush. If you have a greenline oboe and broken tenon, he is the man to go to.

I prefer Michele Forrest as she is much more pleasant to deal with... and you can't get an oboe repair at RDG during cracking season unless your instrument is from RDG!

I'm curious, what didn't you like about it? (I was thinking about buying a strip of "reed box ribbon" from Reeds 'n Stuff In the near future...)

Thanks,

O.

Here is case #1 - hopefully of many!

I used adhesive foam (from the children's craft section of Hobby Lobby) covered with flannelette, and card covered with the same flannelette for the holders. It took a few attempts to get the distance for each reed right, and I have found that it is better to go too small than too big!

The case is an ID holder from a accessories shop which I had to remove the metal spring holders from.

I may do some more experimenting with foam 'a la Robin', but once I got the technique established, this method wasn't too bad.

I love creating things!

I did not like the spacing, too far apart. I did not like the width, not long enough to hold the reed securely. But convenient, just cut, peel and attach.

I like to pamper my reeds. A little special... a little luxury... a little better quality look... yet secure, safe, and long lasting. That stuff was not it.

That's a very good 1st attempt. People are selling worse for money!
