This has probably been asked before. Sorry if it is a repeat. But, I need to know WHO I can purchase good reeds from (rather than from the local music store - They sell Martin Lesher ones and they are not good (consistently sharp). My teacher does not make them anymore for her students. She used to but it became a huge task making reeds for so many students. She has scraped and clipped the Martin Lesher ones for me to make them acceptable. But it's a LOT of work for her to get them right. SO what is the next best choice? Thanks!

I've done well in the past with Mark Chudnow (long time ago, though, and he out-sources his reedmaking some now) and in the present with Cooper Wright. Others have been good but needed adjusting.
As to an AFFORDABLE source, I'm going to keep making my own.

When I was in the US a few years ago, I bought some from Stuart Dunkel. They were good, and I have since heard his name mentioned on this board as well.
And don't forget http://reedreviews.net/blog7/ , it's an honest source!

There are many good reedmakers out there. I have a standing order with
Drew Keller (http://www.oboedrew.com/), who also advertises on this board, and occasionally comments.
What I like about Drew's reeds is that they are very responsive, and very consistent, reed to reed and month to month. I seldom have to do much adjusting, and have absolutely never had a truly "bad" reed from Drew.
People who hear me play are ALWAYS asking "where do you get your reeds?" and I think that is as solid a recommendation as you can get!

Thanks Susan, I'm going to check this out over the weekend. That does sound like a great choice - because when people ask where you've bought something they either love it or hate it and I would rather believe the first.

Me, too, Paula! Me, too!
But I know for sure that several of these questioners have actually become loyal customers, so I am definitely presuming the former!

You will not be disappointed. Provided you play American long scrape...
Listen to his samples on his site. Its a wonderful and beautiful sound he gets.

I don't see her name come up much, but I got a few good ones from Lisa Hudson some time back.

Well, it just happened again -- someone hearing me play this morning (a college-trained oboist in the audience) stopped me afterward and asked where I get my reeds.
I was sitting in as a ringer with the Duke String School orchestra -- son of a friend was soloing on Mozart Third Violin Concerto, and asked me to help. Director of the string school asked my friend, "Who is that oboist! I want her!"
So, it is VERY nice to sometimes win one! Of course, I was playing Puff the Magic Oboe (my much-beloved, and much abused, Covey Classic). It IS a magical instrument. Best high notes in the industry, I swear!
But if you want another testimonial for the efficacy of Drew's reeds, there you have it!

That gives me even more confidence that you all made the right recommendation to me. Thanks. I should get my new reeds sometime after the new year begins.

Thanks for the plugs, Susan and Craig. And thanks for the business, Paula. I'll look forward to making you some reeds.

Susan, you've given credit to your oboe and your reeds, but perhaps YOU deserve some credit too, eh? :-) After all, instruments don't play themselves!
Cheers,
Drew

Well, of the major variables in my playing, I am the one that is most variable. But when all the variables finally work together, things go well. Wish it happened all the time!

I get mine form Mark Chudnow, Try his new staple for EH,
Brian Charles and Forrest Music. If you need bass oboe reeds, the Forrest are good but may need a little extra scraping. For musette,, good luck:)
JUst remember that the Loree Musette is in F and Patricola is in Eb. The reed well are DIFFERET. Try pro reeds. If for baroque reeds bassoon reeds http://koppreeds.com/baroque.html
Historical oboe try Sand Dalton.

OK so I looked up Mark Chudnow but that only raised another question or 2. What is a Chudnow S or Chudnow E staple? What's the difference? The price is the same for each. Curiosity is one of my stronger suits! (That's the engineer/mathematician in me coming out.)
