The few Selmer Paris oboes I've tried were horrendous - poor tuning and weak, thin tone, but the keywork was well made. I doubt they were used by pro players as there are better oboes out there made by oboe specialists. Loree is the most popular make of oboe among US players.

Have you got a link to the video you saw? There are some small firms making pro instruments but they usually have a long waiting list. Laubin and Hiniker are two such makers.

The plastic Selmer USA (Signet Soloist 104) oboe I've got plays far better than any Selmer Paris I've played.

Here's a list of some professionals who play Buffet oboes:

Albrecht Mayer also played a Buffet Greenline before switching to Moennig. I tested a Greenline last year and was very impressed.

The Greenlines would be excellent instruments if they didn't break at the tenon so often! I have heard horror stories but never thought it would ever happen to me. My oboe is still in Berlin, a 5 months wait at this point. Repaired but apparently German customs is blocking my repairman from sending it back to Malaysia. Avoid at all costs!

Wow, how sad, Howard. I'm in Berlin -- can I help you with the customs at all? It doesn't make sense...

Who repaired your instrument?

I also heard that, since the Greenlines are composite, they're especially difficult to repair. :( Hopefully it won't happen to you again... such things are heartbreaking, I know.

My teacher plays professionally and uses a Buffet Greenline. His snapped at the tenon last year but it was still under guarantee and they repaired it free of charge. For reasons which he doesn't understand, it actually sounds nicer now that it has been repaired.

Wilfried from Willy's Holzblaser Atelier sold it to me in 2010 and they agreed to repair it for me for free. Although i insisted on a completely new top joint they told me that France was not willing to handle an instrument sent from Malaysia and that they were on holiday (summer when the tenon broke, just 2 days after i got back from my Berlin trip, talk about bad luck!).

Apparently the work required is not difficult and the oboe has long since been repaired.... i don't understand why it is taking so long for the customs agency to approve. The last time i heard from Willy, about a month ago, they said the instrument would be sent in 2 days after they clear customs....well...i have heard nothing since and they have not replied my e-mail...thank god i have good colleagues! I am playing on a beautiful Loree Royal courtesy of a colleague from Singapore with a super resonant high register, but i really miss the warmth of my Buffet too... =/

Howard

p.s.: pliscapoivre, perhaps if you pass by the shop one of these days you could speak your super fluent German to Wilfried and send my regards, if that does any help at all! He doesn't seem to be very fluent with english at all....

Dear Howard,

I will be happy to go to the shop and ask about your instrument. What is your full name as you gave it to them? I've only been here for one year, and my German isn't "super fluent", but it's functional!

I have a cold right now, but by Tuesday or Wednesday I'm sure I'll be up to it. I hope this eases your mind a bit.

You are the kindest person on earth if you could do that Plisca. "The most distressed Howard Ng Su Chee from Malaysia who misses his Buffet Greenline number: g11792" should put lights on their heads. Do try out some oboes while you are there and let us know what you think. At least that gives you a little bit more reason to turn up there, that eases my guilt of asking for a "strangers" help!

Regards,
Howard

And if they did not yet wrap my oboe in a "presumably safe box unlike the one they sent me with 3 years ago and keys got bent and the oboe got lost with dhl etc etc", do take a try on my oboe!

Howard, who would love to buy you a handsome meal if you ever come to Malaysia/If i ever visit Berlin again.

A quick note about Buffet Greenline oboes.
Aside from the difficulty with the tenon breaking, Greenline oboes can and do crack.
I have had two clients who have had their Greenline oboes crack, and in most dramatic fashion. The fix is to have a new top joint made. Not like fixing a crack in a wood oboe. If the oboe is still under warranty, Buffet will make a new joint gratis. If not under warranty, good luck. The advertising for Greenline oboes states "crack resistant" (true), not "crack proof."
At the IDRS convention in Tempe, I tried a bevy of Greenline oboes.
I was surprised at how much they seemed to differ one from another.
Usually I find the Greenline oboe (in my estimation)
tantamount to being an ("edgy") "reed trumpet." I did manage to find one Greenline on display that was in fact seemed to have some depth and complexity to the sound, and not especially "edgy." Likely best to try as many as possible before choosing.

Peter, i wished i knew better =/ But it was so good before the breaking tenon too... i guess it could be a blessing in disguise, i have learned some cool things making reeds and playing on the current Loree that i am using. Thank you Plisca for making the effort, can't wait to hear from you!

Hi Howard,

I sent you an email about my visit to Willy's this afternoon -- nothing conclusive yet, but it's a start!
