Hi,
Does anyone here use Nagamatsu shapes and have a shaper handle that fits it well? My Nagamatsu shape is very loose in my handle, though all other shapes fit it fine. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Would it be possible to fill the gap with something? ie.: tin foil (aluminum paper) or just a piece of paper.

Both good ideas! Thank you very much.
Cooper, most of my other shapes are Adam brand, and I don't have any problem with them. (shrug)

Does anyone have measurements for the Nagamatsu tips? I'm talking about the tip part, I'm not concerned with the "stem" part (that fits into the handle).

... or you could email me and we could discuss a modification to your handle or a custom handle to fit your tip.
What is the diameter of the stem on that tip and on your others?

I use a regular Westwind handle (with the red knob) when I shape with the Nagamatsu 1 tip. The Nagamatsu tips do not fit in my other handle, a Rigotti.

Thank you, Robert, for your kind offer. I use a number of tips, and my handle works for all the others, so I don't want to make a modification. I think that the problem with the Nagamatsu is this indentation in the stem:
http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=NEk&sa=X&pwst=1&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=J9djJakzOBrU2M:&imgrefurl=http://www.forrestsmusic.com/oboe_cane_shaping.htm&docid=uvoRK1umNeDElM&imgurl=http://www.forrestsmusic.com/images/shaper_dimensions.jpg&w=200&h=69&ei=U5THTt-DGc6QswaOkcWqBw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=541&vpy=207&dur=89&hovh=55&hovw=160&tx=72&ty=26&sig=107140289276218524705&page=1&tbnh=55&tbnw=160&start=0&ndsp=13&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0&biw=1320&bih=559
In answer to your question, the diameter of the stem on my Nagamatsu is 3.1 mm. The part with the indentation is 2.3 mm. My -1N is 2.66mm. My Adam shapers are all 3.1 as well. Despite being smaller, the -IN fits fine, so it has to be the indentation in the Nagamatsu...
Thank you, too, Andy, for the suggestion. I'll look into it.
wrowand, people tend to take the measurements from different areas that they find to be important, and I find that they don't always line up. My Nagamatsu 0B measures 8.1 mm between the ears, 6.7 at 10 mm down, 6.28 at 20 mm, and 4.42 at 30 mm. However, I don't have the right equipment to take measurements this precise, so don't pay much attention to what I'm saying, please.

When I suggested to fill the gap, I thought that the diameter of the well in the handle was much larger than the diameter of the stem of the tip but if the problem seems to be the indentation in the stem of the tip, the solution might be a little longer locking screw (the screw might not be making contact -enough- with the stem).

Aha, now that sounds like a wonderful idea. Thanks, Jeremias. Um, where can I buy a locking screw?

Have you tried twisting the shaper tip through 180 degrees, and closing your locking screw on the rounded part?
Many shaper tips don't have a flattened edge. Getting the angle exactly 90 degrees to the clamps is pretty easy to do by sight.

To find a longer (locking) screw, that small, might not be very easy but I would take the handle to a hardware store to see if they have something that would fit, I would also try a hobby shop (train/airplane, etc). What jhoyla (jeremy) suggests, might very well work. To get the angle 90 degrees to the clamps, I close the clamps, without locking the screw, over the shaper tip (without cane), and then lock the screw.
Good luck.

Excellent. Thanks, everyone. Indeed, I have the same problem no matter which way the tip is facing in the handle, so I shall battle on with the other suggestions I've received until something works well.

Funny you should ask. I got this file from Mr. Laubin last summer. Haven't tried any tips yet but it's fun to put these numbers into a graphing program and compare the curves.

...file didn't attach the first time.
I forgot to mention that I made a tip like his #1 recently. It came out okay. I like the wide throat dimensions in these tips that appears to be hard to find in most commercial tips.
Richard
Okay...so the file won't attach. It's a 2.7 MB jpg. Maybe it's too large. If you want a copy, send email.
