I have used my Lorée CR75 professionally, constantly and exclusively, since I bought it from the factory in the middle 60's (for US$570.00!). It shows no signs of 'blowing out'. I too think that's a myth.
It's certainly true that during the early life of a new instrument it changes considerably but after the break in period, unless the player has corrosive saliva, I don't believe noticeable change takes place.
Keywork wears out, but that doesn't affect the sound quality. And yes, the wood probably is part of the equation, particularly with newer horns...
