ok so it has recently gotten a lot colder over night here and my reeds aren't playing too well. pretty much the notes from low E down I have to really force to get to speak at all (and half the time it's coming out in some pitch about an octave higher).
any scraping tips that will help my reed speak?
Is this even a reed issue, or could something be wrong with my oboe? I had a sticky key last week, but that was middle C.
Thanks,
TYO

How do your reeds crow? Does the low crow 'enter' when it should? If not, I would scrape lightly near the spine of the reed. Then maybe a quick touch on the corners of the tip if the low crow is not as clear as it should be or if the reed seems a bit resistant.
If the crow and resistance seem correct, then it is possible that your oboe may be out of adjustment.

How about resharpening your knife and thinning the tip some more?
You may wish to follow the advice of a famous oboe player in Rochester, NY who felt that he had to occasionally put his open reed case under an incandescent lamp for ten minutes to thoroughly dry out the whole reed. Moisture can get trapped in the butt of the oboe reed due to variations in barometric pressure, making it too stiff. Good Luck!
