Thanks for the tips. I haven't actually made it back to scraping that particular reed yet - too much else going on! But I will bear all those things in mind.
I vaguely remember that there was one bit of cane in this batch that didn't want to sink when I soaked it... Maybe it's this one, and maybe that's the problem...
