What HautboisJJ and pliscapoivre said is right.
=> YOUR definition of the word strangled is very important: we all have different words for the same thing and use the same words for different things.... can be very confusing and misleading.

If the reed is not too hard, sometimes I have found that reducing the back (where it is already scraped) opens up those harsh qualities of the crow.... this removes the strangling (or choking) sensation. But be careful, because overdoing it can make the reed really unstable.

If you have tied the reed past the staple, even 1/2 a trhead twist, there might not be any hope. Also, if your cane is spongy or green, there is really no hope.
=> Over the years, you will learn to recognize this.
