However, I guess the reed is too hard and too open.

In my experience flat reeds usually have a large opening and lack of flexibility. You cut them - scrape them - squeeze them (which sometimes works)- do crazy things to them and they are still flat!

I have learned to take early pleasure in destroying them before they destroy me!
