 Re: Gouged cane dimensions

Hi,

I received 6 pieces of cane from Dan Ross - gouged with a new curve.

As I stated, I provided Dan my staple length, tie length, and shaper tip dimension and make of Oboe.

I made 5 playable reeds from the 6 pieces.

At first, I found the reeds to be strident with an edge - they lacked the warmth of my former reeds. As I adjusted them - and let them sit for a few day ............things changed - I had two excellent reeds and 3 good ones.

I had to adjust my scrape a little as well as my embouchure - since the reeds required more air support and a firmer embouchure. I also had to get use to a more demanding upper register which needed more support.

I was very confused on whether I liked the new tone or not. It had more depth and more delineation; yet - I felt the upper register was more difficult and a little less flexible. I was concerned about a possible lack of warmth in the tone.

Today, I had my rehearsal .... and what a difference in the hall. Everyone noticed when I played - they commented on the new tone and loved it!

The core sound is well defined and resonant. There is less spread. The tone penetrates the orchestra well .... and most importantly - it sounded beautiful in the hall.

All this - from a modification of the blade curve!

I am a believer ............... we choose shaper tips, staples, tie lengths. etc............ and it appears the curve is so crucial.

I am not exactly sure what Dan did to adjust the gouge ....... and I am still wary about the upper register ....... I may need to play with the reeds more.

Before I forgot - there was a great increase in pitch stability and some changes in the way some notes played ..................... I could now really punch the sound through the reed without pitch concerns.

Mark
