Woot! Welcome to my neck of the woods (I'm in Decatur). Champaign/Urbana is an excellent place to live and the University of Illinois is awesome.
My two youngest kids are currently attending the U of I, and would wish to note for your benefit that the campus police take jaywalking VERY seriously on and around campus, so always cross at the lights or at designated crosswalks. Seriously. They give out actual tickets for jaywalking, because students have been hit by cars.
Also, they don't mess around when it comes to parking your car in permit-only lots; they WILL tow. Fortunately the city bus system in Chambana is also awesome, and U of I students ride free (investigate that, eh).
Major shopping district (Wal-Mart et al) is up on North Prospect, with the mall to the east. All streets pretty much run in a NSEW grid, so drive west to Prospect, hang a right, and go north until you see Classic Shopping Sprawl, then pick your Big Box. Downtown Champaign is the anomaly and can be tricky to get around in, due to its having been built to conform to the railroad tracks that go in all directions, but the rest of the area outside that is pretty easy to learn.
Chambana has the best international/ethnic foods groceries in Central Illinois, if you're into food. They're funky and authentic, but very welcoming, so don't be intimidated by the unprepossessing storefront.
