I think it is wise to have three or more batches of different cane. Different characteristics of finished reeds interact with the seasons, weather, and type of music being performed (chamber vs. orchestral).
I try to tie at least a reed from each of my batches - and/or a few more depending upon the attributes of a batch and my needs.

PS: Cane selection is similar to statistics - you have between group variance as well as within group variance! It is very hard to find a complete correlation and/or particular cane the will explain 100% of the results.
