Some people actually use saliva to condition the reed, especially the new ones. Saliva does make the harder fiber grains to soften and therefore make the reed to produce more "rounded" and refined tone. It take 3-5 days to mellow which is actually being digested by the enzyme in the saliva, depends on the length of being soaked in saliva. However, the partially digested reed does not last very long. For every day playing, it would probably last a week or two, depends. Water soaked reeds tends to last much longer, in the order of months. If you soak the reed with water and rinse off the saliva from the reed with water after playing, it will last even longer.
