Oboesax, this is the kind of thing I had in mind. I will by no means be a professional cor player, I would just love something to use in amateur groups.
My first oboe was a pre-Loree Cabart, absolutely beautiful tone despite the enormous repaired crack but the mechanism was pretty worn and subsequently was retired from duty last year. I would be more than happy to look at another Cabart for a cor, but I have become so dependent on the left F, I would need to find one with it! My Cabart oboe didn't have one. And I do a lot of band work.
My reason for looking at the Fox was simply that there was no chance of it cracking given that it wouldn't be regularly played, and if by chance I did an outdoor gig (as we tend to do a lot here in Oz) I wouldn't have to be concerned. I do not want to get a new/newish wood cor as I don't have time or chance to really play it in, and I would be constantly worried about it.
I have heard that Howarth makes the S20c and S40C with a lining in the top joint, does anyone know if this is true? Midwest sells them, I think.
I have played two cors, both only for a rehearsal and concert. One was a school Howarth S20c, which when I played it made me wonder what the big deal was about playing cor - no tuning or tonal issues that my untrained ear could detect (and I had only been playing oboe for about a year at this stage). I have also played a Selmer Paris - hard work tuning wise!! It felt good, but it was too much effort to work around.
Oboelips, I live in a place where double reed players, especially decent ones, are rare. There are our two state symphony players (cor player just retired), one or two semi-pros, and a few amateurs who do all the community music gigs. And I only know of one guy who owns a cor, and its thumbplate, so there goes that idea. There are two cors shared among our schools, both Howarths.
Mary, we are hopefully coming to the US in August, hopefully (having some visa issues, but that's another story). Part of the reason why I'm dreaming, I guess, as I'll have much more access to try/purchase/hire/etc.
Peter, you amaze me! And inspire me. I wish to one day have as much knnowledge in a single field as you do in yours.
