The wisdom of my old prof has always worked for me:
=> soak it until it sinks!
If your cane does not sink in 45 minutes, it's probably horrible cane.
Otherwise, for tying, this will help prevent cracks and will not adversely affect it.
If it still cracks, it's either faulty OR amazing quality.
Do let the tied reed "sit" for at least 2 weeks (better 2 months) before scraping it. I know as a beginner maker, you might have difficulty affording enough cane and staples to do this, but it really does make a difference.
