Hot tap water, throw a bunch of pieces in, start tying ~20-25 minutes later. Don't go over an hour.

If you thin the ends, do this first to all the pieces. You can start very soon after the soaking starts, and you put the piece back into the water while you thin the rest.

While you are still gaining expertise here you should start with two or three pieces. You'll soon get to the point where you can manage five or six pieces in the hour.

If you soak for too long the cane gets supersaturated and then will definitely crack as you tie it on (it will look a deep orange color instead of the normal beige). It also cracks if you tie when the cane is still not soaked through, hence hot water and 20-25 minutes.

There are other methods that I have heard of (mainly German school) where heat is used; the soaked cane is first "formed" directly onto a hot mandrel, then removed and tied onto a staple. This - apparently - is crack proof, but I've never tried it myself.

J.
