Re: Issues with reedmaking and octave slurs

So I already have figured for a while I'd need to take my oboe to a repairman to get adjusted and cleaned out since it has been quite a long time since I last did, but my reeds are doing this for my students as well. One of my students even has a brand new oboe she's been playing on and the reeds will do this for her.

My professor from undergrad emailed me several suggestions for the reed in case it wasn't just the octave vent being gunked up (which was his number one suggestion to me in his email. Looks like that seems to be a major agreement point!). In regards to maybe it being a reed issue, he wrote:

- Your reed in general may be too soft.
- Your reed may have too much cane removed from the "heart" area behind the tip.
- The tip opening may be too large. You may need to remove can from the "rails" and/or sides of the heart.
- The shape of the cane may be too wide at the tip.

Any other suggestions for a reed doing this? I'll take my oboe to get adjusted and cleaned, but I can't help feel that this is also a reed issue since my students are having this issue every so often with reeds I make too.

I also have a sneaky feeling it could be the cane I'm using. It is different than the normal cane I normally use as the place I order from sent it to me and it has been on all the reeds made with this cane that this happens.

Thanks for any insight guys! :) I was pleasantly surprised to see so many responses so fast!
