The product you refer us to has that 'benzakonium chloride' in it, which, unlike alcohol, will NOT dry the reed out. I'm not terribly sure about the other ingredients, ethyl-things can break down into alcohol but I'm no chemist. I would think that this would be pretty safe, if you do not detect any damage to the reed or change in your sound.

I push a wet pipe cleaner all the way through, supporting the blades the while, and I use plain water.

Giving the reed TIME to DRY out would also be a way to avoid bacterial build-up. And, of course, 'not sharing' unless you use some sort of disinfectant.

Philosophy point: it isn't so much that we are literally surrounded by millions of 'bugs' all the time, but that our immune systems (for various reasons) are 'flabby' and therefore the (usual) bugs have a better chance of making us ill.

So along with reed-cleaning and being careful, avoid envrionmental nasties, exercise your bod, eat right, get enough sleep!
