Gosh, guys, I can't describe my technique in the nice clean detail that you do. I tend to make my reeds so 'incrementally' that I 'ease as I go', aiming for a clear sound with lots of dynamic range, then scaling back in eensy-weensy bits until the response is butter-easy.

I usually finish my reeds in a group rehearsal, like community symphony break time. Once they hit a certain AHA! I know I'm done and can put them in the Concert Line-up.

It takes weeks, and is NOT cost-effective if one is making reeds for a living, that's for dang sure.

I guess to 'ease' a reed I work mostly in the blend and heart; my reed backs tend to be a little thicker than is vogue, and I don't care for really thick rails, but I do end up with a nice reed in the end. Like I said, the 'incremental' approach takes a long time. For me, it's worth it.
