I will apologise in advance, that this is not entirely about oboe-ing! But I am hoping fellow forum members who have lived in these areas or studied here may be able to offer some insight.
My partner has been offered Masters positions at both University of Florida and University of Illinois. We continue to swing between the two as to which way we should go. We have visited the US twice, once being last year when we did a college tour, so we have been to both of these universities. I will be taking oboe lessons, playing in bands and studying some orchestration and arranging. We have been to Chicago as well for the Midwest Clinic and I fell in love with the area (yes, I was an Aussie there in winter, and I'm sure I will survive the cold somehow!), so I would not be unhappy to be close-ish at UI! But the weather in Florida is much closer to ours.
As this is more about the experience that the piece of paper for us (only one other person in our state has done this before, so its pretty unique), based on the lifestyle, job availability (possibly part-time teaching), cost of living, etc, can anyone give me any feedback about Gainesville and Urbana-Champaign?
Thanks,
Rachel
