As long as your teacher is a real oboist, and making the reeds, I would not experiment too much for now.
I would suggest you buy the David Weber reed maker's manual... it is the best resource I've seen, and a few others are also very good.
Free is always nice, and the ASU Oboe page Robin mentions is a great resource.
