My Jarde's upper and lower joints have a 1-1.5 mm gap, because someone had inserted a metal sleeve years ago. Like you, I do not notice an appreciable difference in the playing of the instrument. (It also has a noticeable 'bend' and is a very old instrument.) My own inclination is to leave it.

I hope someone more technical than me can respond to your query.
