 Re: Cor Anglais thumbplate fitting

It is indeed possible - I've got a fully automatic Marigaux d'amore which I had both a thumbplate and 2nd 8ve touch added so I can use the 2nd 8ve key when playing leaps up to high A to high C. The 2nd 8ve touch will do exactly the same thing as the 1st (back) 8ve but it does give you the option to use it as you would use the 2nd 8ve touch on a semi-auto.

The thumbplate will allow you to use thumbplate fingerings for Bb and C, but instead of the side key duplicating the thumbplate action for trills and tremolos, the side key is an extra G# key (for G-Ab trills) and the thumbplate action is now under RH finger 1, so an A-Bb and B-C trill is done by playing A or B and trilling RH1. Your Fossati oboe will also be dual system.

I use mainly conservatoire fingerings for Bb and C and only use the thumbplate for some intervals (such as A to C) and arpeggios (eg. F major) - though with dual system (conservatoire with added thumbplate) you have the best of both worlds and then some as you can't do a decent G-Bb or G-C tremolo without either having to raise the thumbplate or put down RH1 for the Bb and C. You keep the thumb pff the thumbplate and only raise and lower the LH fingers needed for these tremolos.

Right now I've got a Markardt cor in for a service which is fully automatic ring key (like your Lafleur) which I'll be adding a 2nd 8ve touch to for the owner as she too can't get on with having just the single (back) 8ve key - it has already been converted to dual system.

While Howarth are adding the thumbplate, have them add the 2nd 8ve touch at the same time.

The opinions I express are my own.
