 Re: Typical reed lengths

I tie on ~73mm, 47mm staples, using any cane I can get my hands on. I'm tying a little shorter nowadays, and don't put quite as much tension on the thread when wrapping the overlap (top 2-3 turns, the cord looks a tiny bit fatter).
Objective: the cane is snug against the staple all the way up, but the cord does not deform the bark (and never wraps over the end of the staple). Blades seal all the way to the tip.

I have a very successful shaper that has no markings, but seems to have been bought from P.Angelo in NY in the late 70s - approx .69 at the top and quite a flare to the shape. The flare helps keep the blades sealing all the way to the tip.

Recently I have made several reeds using a Pisoni #3 shape (about 7.1 mm across the top) and they were surprisingly successful, very responsive and with a great dynamic range. The 2nd octave-key notes sound a bit flimsy, but a lovely chocolate sound for all of the lower octave down to Bb. You need really good cane for a wider shape, otherwise the reed collapses in no time flat. Cane that powders when you scrape, and doesn't shred.

I seriously intend to move to 46mm staples, since I like having more cane on the reed and A=442 is the standard round here.

Who started a thread on my pet obsession?
Damn.
