Go to a plumbing supply store and get 1/4 inch OD, 1/8-inch ID tubing (1/16-inch wall). Ask for sample of 4-inches or so. There are variety of colors available. If you go to a shop like Ralph's, they may give you little pieces for free as sample. Get different colors. Cut the tube for different lengths like, 1-mm, 1.5-mm, 2-mm, 2.5-mm and even 3-mm. Each length in different color. Now you have color coded ferrules. A long ferrule tends to flatten the right hand notes and may affect 3rd octave notes.
When it is dry, it just slides out. But when wet (usually the case after playing for awhile), your pull through swab usually takes it out. Or your small screw driver easily helps to slide it out.
