IF you have a good foundation in terms of correct breathing, technique, etc., you can progress fairly rapidly. It also helps to have a good instrument! (My first professional oboe was a Marigaux...)
You didn't mention if you were studying privately with anyone; if you are, great. If you are self-taught, I would highly recommend at least a 'check up' lesson. I'd played a year and a half before I started serious lessons, and had to UNlearn quite a bit of bad habit.
