hey, I know some really good clarinetists who play in community orchestras!...

I would ask the director, perhaps just before or after a rehearsal, what he is looking for. Could he please clarify what he means? More depth of sound? Warmth? I agree that if you don't know the problem, you can hardly know where to start to fix it.

I would also recommend practicing with your tuner on the stand (at home) and see if you are generally on pitch, and if your long notes waiver (without vibrato). This can help you listen to yourself more critically. The rest is, as the others have said, a matter of embouchure and reeds.

And definitely find a 'model' sound to emulate, whether U-tube or a recording. Some nice players out there...
