If you read Haynes/Burgess "The Oboe", one realizes that this has long been a sort of tradition in the italian oboe world. Of course a complete stereotyping cannot exist today (could Pasculli have played like that?); players like Paolo Grazzi are very much away from that sort of tradition. Interestingly, the best of the HIP movement in Italy, some of the best in the world alternates from 415-450 on a daily basis flawlessly, take Alfredo Bernardini (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwIedzuhYOI), absolutely stunning playing. Of course, no one likes an unplayable reed, when i say heavier, it doesn't mean "unplayable" in that sense of the word. Many Americans find short scrape reeds unplayable, vice versa. Ha! I have seen some so called "traditional" Italian reeds and most of them needed very much a sort of biting. But that is true also with many of the French reeds, even the best nowadays from makers like Le Rousseau Chantant. Go figure!
